The mystery about The Keep

This reference was posted to the Tangerine Dream Mailinglist by Steven Feldman. He did the hard work to compare the 'Keeps'. I added the pictures and some more records regarding The Keep.

OFFICIAL [TDI] THE KEEP compared to BLUE MOON and THE COMPLETE WORKS

Written and compiled by Steven Feldman.

Okay. Now let's get down to business.  I'll comment and remark on similarities between TDI010, the other two TDs, and film itself track-by track, in sequential order.

1. Puer Natus est Nobis (Gloria theme) (3:09)

This track is pretty much the same as Blue Moon track 10, but it has nice instrumentation in the background which makes it vastly superior to the virtually a cappella version on the Blue Moon boot.

2. Ancient Powerplant (4:28)

This is Blue Moon track 12--one of the four tracks broadcast on German radio--"Fisherman's Morning" (3:20), but this version is better and longer. The song itself appears nowhere in the film.

3. The Silver Seal (3:07)

This track, reminiscent of material on HYPERBOREA and of "Love Phantasy" off the FLASHPOINT soundtrack, contains music not in the film, and not on the Blue Moon boot nor LOGOS TYPE.

4. Voices from a Common Land (4:06)

This is Blue Moon track 11--one of the four tracks broadcast on German radio--"Romanian Road" (2:52), and seems to be identical to the version on the BM boot, except longer. The song itself appears nowhere in the film.

5. Arx Allemand (4:24)

This is a jaunty, neo-classical tune that sounds somewhat like a combination of the styles of Tomita and Walter/Wendy Carlos, and brings to mind what a funkified version of "Hobo March" (a/k/a "Ode to Granny A" off Edgar's AGES album) might sound like. This tune does not appear in the film, the Blue Moon boot, nor LOGOS TYPE.

6. The Night in Romania (3:15)

Finally! A tune that is not a cover of a classical composition that actually appears in the film! This music comes from the climax where Dr. Cuza yells to Molasar, "So . . . you prove yourself to *me*!" This music also appears on LOGOS TYPE as Track Six. It is not on the Blue Moon boot.

7. Canzone (2:51)

This tune also appears in the film. It comes from the sequence wherein Dr. Cuza walks out of the sub-basement of the keep and past the silver crosses in the walls which light up as he passes them. It is not on the Blue Moon boot nor LOGOS TYPE.

8. Sign in the Dark (4:19)

This track corresponds to LOGOS TYPE Track 5. This music, although quite Keep-esque, does not appear in the film nor on the Blue Moon boot.

9. Weird Village (3:23)

This track is reminiscent of an early track on the WAVELENGTH soundtrack. I'm not sure which track. This tune does not appear in the film nor the Blue Moon boot nor LOGOS TYPE.

10. Love and Destiny (3:31)

This track is reminiscent of material on the DESTINATION BERLIN soundtrack, even though DB is from 1989 and THE KEEP is from 1983! It did not appear in the film, nor the Blue Moon boot, nor on LOGOS TYPE.

11. The Challenger's Arrival (4:32)

This track is very similar to Blue Moon track 6, Evil Healing. At the 3 minute mark, however, this "official" version diverges. The Blue Moon boot version is better IMHO because it is spookier. This tune does not appear in the film nor on LOGOS TYPE as far as I know, and yet, since most of what is on the Blue Moon boot is indeed in the film, I am not sure of this.

12. Supernatural Accomplice (4:07)

This track starts off sounding like a track of the WAVELENGTH soundtrack, then has a portion of the beginning of "Cloudburst Flight" (from FORCE MAJEURE), then is similar to Blue Moon track 4, "Deadly Silver Crosses," but the contents of the tune are in a different order so that the backwards-air sound at the end of "Deadly Silver Crosses" appears towards the beginning of "Supernatural Accomplice" (this track). This version of the song does not appear in the film per se: it is a variant. It is not on LOGOS TYPE at all.

13. Parallel Worlds (4:29)

This music does not appear in the film, nor the Blue Moon boot, nor on LOGOS TYPE. It is unique and unlike anything else TD has done.  I have all four of Johannes Schmoelling's albums, and it is my guess that this track is 100% Johannes' doing since I don't hear any Froese influence whatsoever.

14. Truth and Fiction (2:52)

This track, which does not appear in the film nor on LOGOS TYPE, has sounds at the end that are similar to those found on track 12 (which, in turn, corresponds to Blue Moon Track 4, "Deadly Silver Crosses"). Otherwise, this track is all-new (to *me*, at least).

15. Wardays Sunrise (3:20)

This track, which does not appear in the film nor the Blue Moon boot nor LOGOS TYPE, features a guitar lead similar to that on track 11 ("The Challenger's Arrival").

16. Heritage Survival (4:13)

This track, which does not appear in the film nor the Blue Moon boot, is basically LOGOS TYPE Track Three with guitar added, but it fades out, leaving the impression that, like "Silver Scale," it is an excerpt from a longer piece. This is a great, majestic tune, similar to the ending of "Logos Pt. II," but more upbeat. It is more or less the high point of the LOGOS TYPE boot.

So, there you have it. There are only three and a half tracks that appear in the film (track 12, "Supernatural Accomplice," being the half). One of the three tracks broadcast on German radio, "Sailing Mission," is nowhere to be found. The long variant of "Moorland" in the film which clocks in at about seven minutes is not be found. Ditto the seven-minute ending that appears on the UHF-only syndicated TV broadcasts of the film. Actually, not even the end tune from the *regular* cut of the film is on the TDI010 CD!

For those who like the film more than TD per se, a better bet than TDI010 would be the Blue Moon boot and tracks 3-7 on LOGOS TYPE (or 22 minutes of TD's 1982 Croydon concert, starting at the 6:40 mark).
